You probably never give tow trucks all that much thought, unless you’re stuck on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck, which is normal since you have day-to-day living on your mind. Though towing experts are readily available to provide services when you need them, few consider other aspects of towing. Towing is an Age Old Profession
A mechanic named Ernest Holmes was tasked with retrieving a Ford Model T that had driven off the road into a creek back in 1916. Only after six men spent eight hours pulling that car back up onto the road by hand, the car was saved, eventually. He was determined to come up with a simpler solution as Holmes was frustrated that the ordeal took so long. Holmes eventually received a patent for his tow truck machine in 1919, though it took a lot of trial and error.

On the back of his 1913 Cadillac is where Holmes’s mounted first towing machine. IN order to handle the crane and pulley system, he modified his car. The design was not quite stable enough to handle daily towing duties, unfortunately. We might live in a world where all towing services drive Cadillacs if that would have worked. It was a converted 1913 steam-powered vehicle after Ernest’s first successful commercial tow truck sold for $485.
