Fall Vehicle Maintenance Checklist to Help Avoid Needing a Tow for a Breakdown or Car Accident in Antioch, CA

Fall is here and you will want to perform your automobile maintenance to avoid unexpected break downs. There are a number of basic maintenance procedures your automobile needs during the fall to ensure your vehicle runs efficiently throughout the winter season. Calderon Tow & Auto would like to share some of the basic fall maintenance check list to help prevent unexpected break downs.

Time for an Oil Change

It is recommended to get an oil change every 5000 miles. Motor oil helps lubricate the moving parts of the vehicle. Not only does the oil help lubricate but it also reduces the chance of the vehicle overheating. During an oil change the air filter is changed out as well which improves gas mileages and an efficiency cooling and heating system. Another major consideration is that some parts of California can get very cold and even snow. If you tend to drive through the colder parts of California low motor oil can freeze. To prevent oil from freezing you will want to make sure your vehicle have full oil.

Check Tire Pressure

As the temperature drops, so will the inside of the tire’s pressure. For every 10 degree drop, you tire can lose between 1 to 2 pounds of air pressure. Low air pressure can lead to flat tires and or blowouts. To avoid a potential accident or the need for a tire change be sure to check your tires pressure.

Replace Windshield Wipers

In the northern California area, such as in San Francisco, the rainy season starts in November and lasts through March. During the hot summer season your windshield wipers may have dried out and cracked. You will want to make sure the windshield wipers are fresh for the upcoming rainy season. When performing your fall maintenance, make sure to replace the windshield wipers to ensure you have proper visibility while on the road.

Inspect Car Battery

As many people well know, heat can reduce the life of a battery. However, during the colder season is when the battery is under the most strain. Colder weather means you will use the heater more often and the days are also shorter which mean you will be using your lights more. To make sure your battery doesn’t die while you are on the road, you may want to check the battery for corrosion, leaks and check its charge.

Test Lights

During the fall and winter season the days will become shorter and shorter. This means you will be using your lights more and more. A burned out headlight may not seem like a big deal but it reduces visibility at night. You may even get a ticket when a single light is out. Make sure to check your headlights, taillights, turn signal lights, and your emergency lights. Make sure no bulb needs to be replaced.
